Fantasy Thursdays: Final Recap

The Summer Split of the North American LCS ended this past weekend. That means the fantasy league is done, for now. If I recall correctly, there might be opportunities to play again during the playoffs, or maybe during worlds. If not, I can wait til next season too. Disappointment was felt this past week, as I lost my match due to some unforseen circumstances, and as such ended in a three way tie for first, and lost due to the second tiebreaker. The tiebreaker was based on overall points, and I lost out to Judentus by 110 points. I would not have beaten him in that category had I won last week’s match either, but I would have had sole possession of first place so tiebreakers wouldn’t have mattered. Boo to that. And boo to the way I lost my match. This championship should belong to me!

So remember when I said that I put Xiaoweixiao in at the last minute because he was projecting higher than Fenix? Well then he got busted for ELO boosting (which I’m not sure of the whole story, but apparently it’s considered unsportsmanlike) and wasn’t available for fantasy. I didn’t notice this til Saturday, as I usually have my teams locked in on Thursdays. So I was out two games worth of mid-laner points. Bullshit I say. If there was money riding on this I’d be really pissed.

To top it off, that epic Team Impulse versus Team Liquid game netted me ridiculous points, and if XWX would have been there, I would have definitely won. I only needed 19 points. Hell, I could have left Fenix there, and no problems. Worst possible timing for a pro player to get busted for something stupid. I now know to watch out for this if I play again in the future. Maybe Fantasy Football this year? However, I can’t put all of the blame on XWX. Gravity had a terrible showing all weekend, so the team and Hauntzer both could have made up the 20 points for me, and I would have won anyway. I actually was anticipating a win towards the end there, but fell just short. Story of my life.

Top players of the week and the whole summer, just because:

week9top summertopsplit

The entirety of TiP is on the top list for last week, minus XWX… like fuck what are the odds? Even looking at the top players of the whole split, I have 3 out of 5. I clearly knew what I was doing. In the top image, you’ll see where there was a feedback option. I wrote something along the lines of being able to swap a player like XWX who gets in trouble at the last minute, even if it’s for only sunday and not the whole weekend. I only needed 20 points to win my matchup, I’m pretty sure I could have gotten that in one day’s worth of play from a single player. It would have been a gamble but it would have felt more fair.

Either way, kudos to Judentus for doing winning the whole thing, and to Teamsoapymid for keeping up with us. Nertle, sorry bud but your team was a joke. That’s all I have for now. We’ll see when the next fantasy opportunity arises, and I’ll write about it then.

Fantasy Thursdays Week 8

standingsAnother week down, and the streak continues! After what was looking to be a disappointing season, starting off 1-2, my team has gone on a hot streak, winning four games in a row. I am now fully in control of my own destiny, as a win will keep me in first place across the board. Other scenarios include losing, which puts me into a tie with Teamsoapymid once again, and then it will come down to point totals. I currently lead her, but Judentus still has more total points than I do, so that makes things more complicated were I to lose and he ends up winning.  That would put three of us in a tie for first, and he’d probably take it with more points at that time. So I just need to win this week and keep the dream alive! We shall see how it goes, but first, let’s look at what happened last week:

In week 8, I had solid performances from most of my players, though Fenix and Rekkles didn’t put up the numbers they have for me in the past. Everyone else did well for their rolls, and I ended up eking out a win. It wasn’t looking pretty for a little while there, but at least in the end I prevailed. Looking forward to this weekend, there were some tough decisions to be made.

It didn’t come down so much to the lane matchups of my team versus their team, but more who my team members were playing against more specifically. On the surface, you can see that my projected points are lower than theirs (though it did fluctuate a bit beyond when I got this screenshot), and you’ll see I had swapped out BunnyFuuFu for Lustboy because he was projecting higher. I don’t solely rely on projections though, because doing a little bit of research, I found that nine times out of ten players like Rush and Apollo will project ~30 points and then end up posting 60+. Let’s look at my roster going into the match:

So yes, I did swap Lustboy in, though I also made another change at the last minute, so I preemptively screwed up these screen shots, but let me explain. I put Xiaoweixiao in for Fenix as well, because not only was he projecting higher, but as of late, Gravity and Team Impulse have been giving me more points than Team Liquid (and seemingly performing better on the Rift IRL as well). I put all of my eggs into the Gravity and TiP baskets, minus Rekkles and Lustboy of course, because I wanted a little diversity and they have both done well for me in the past. There are some tough matchups though, with Gravity and TiP playing each other, but then playing a weaker team afterwards (Gravity faces TDK and Impulse is playing Liquid). The TiP vs TL game was the kicker, as I feel like TiP will outperform and outplay TL, so I didn’t want another awkward lane in this roster for the week by leaving Fenix in. Either way, win or lose, I feel like GV vs TiP we’ll see points spreading both ways. It’s a gamble, but I’ve been doing that the whole time, and it hasn’t always paid off. Still, going with my gut this time around.

Let’s take a look at the leaders of the pack for week 8 and the summer now, just for posterity:

week8top summertop5

It’s surprising to see two members of Team 8 as top scorers for the week, but they did have pretty convincing performances last weekend. It seems like after making some substitutions they’re finally starting to gel, albeit a little too late. I believe it was said they *could* make playoffs, but I think it was more like they were just going to avoid auto-relegation. Also odd that a Cloud 9 player was present, but they did have a good couple of games as well. Apollo made another appearance on the list, and is also one of the top summer players, along with Rekkles, who has been there for a while. Both of my ADCs I’ve owned since day one have been solid contributors.

That’s it for this week. We’ll see how the final week of the season went, next Thursday.

Fantasy Thursdays Week 7

week7standingsI managed to come away with a very commanding victory this past week, and that’s mainly due to the fact that the players I have built my squad around have given me some stellar performances as of late. One player in particular had his best week of the whole split, netting around 70 points alone, while I managed to get the win by a margin of nearly 100 points. The 376 points earned overall is my best point total to date, so I must be getting pretty good at picking players and matchups. As you can see, I now hold onto sole possession of first place, with a 4-2 record, and the tie breaker of a few points to stay ahead of Teamsoapymid. I’m playing Nertle this week, and I think that’s a win already, and as of right now (EULCS starts on Thursdays) TSM is beating out Judentus, so provided my point total stays higher I will maintain first place. Anyway, here are the results for week 7:

As you can see, it actually paid off to put most of my eggs in the the Team Impulse basket last week, as Rush, Xiaoweixiao and Apollo all put up fantastic point totals. Hauntzer and Rekkles stayed pretty average, but consistency is great for fantasy. Gravity as a team put up big numbers and so did BunnyFuFuu, though Aphromoo beat him out by a small amount. Either way I was very satisfied by the performances. I did make one small change to the lineup for week 8 though. Let’s take a look.

I swapped out Xiaoweixiao for Fenix, but otherwise didn’t touch the roster. Fenix is projecting more points, and though CLG might be a tough match for TL, I have my doubts about Xiaoweixiao going up against Bjergsen. Otherwise I was comfortable with the other players and matchups, so it’s basically more of the same. I don’t see where I’m going to need to do more trades throughout the rest of the split, honestly.

Nertle is sticking with his all Origen team, and I’m confident that this will end up being a win. For most of the split I thought that Judentus was going to be my biggest roadblock to getting into first place, but with recent losses it’s starting to look like Teamsoapymid will be my greatest challenge going forward. I should be playing her in week 9, and that might end up being for all the cookies. Just like last week, I want to take a look at the top performers as well to see how those have changed:

week7top summertopplayers

As I mentioned a couple times already, Apollo put up great numbers for me this past week. However, it’s worth noting that I owned Powerofevil for the first couple of weeks and he did abysmally, and now he’s right up there with Apollo at the top. Goes to show you really never know how any one individual is going to perform during any given week. I still wouldn’t have had him on my team at this point but some fantasy owners would be happy with that. Rush also made the top list for the second time this season, and Impulse have pushed their way up the rankings. Gravity, Liquid and Impulse seem to be the top teams right now, despite CLG and TSM being right there with them. Moving on to the top players of the split, Rekkles has now taken the top spot for most points earned. As I said earlier, consistency is great for fantasy.

That’s all for this week. We’ll see ya again next Thursday.

Fantasy Thursdays Week 6

standingsWeek 6 went in my favor again, so I’ve been on a bit of a streak. As it stands now, I’m in a three way tie for first place in my league, and two scenarios can occur from here on out. If I win this week, I would either take sole possession of first place, or be in a two way tie with Teamsoapymid, dependent on the result of their game this week. With a win and a loss from Teamsoapymid, I will take first place overall. I think I have a good chance of this happening, but I’d still be ok with a tie, as long as they were to lose next week and I was to also win. That’s really the only way that I’ll be able to take first place for the season. I have to beat Judentus this week (which I’m confident will happen) and then TSM has to lose either this week or the next. Basically it’s out of my hands what happens with the other game, so I’m hoping that Nertle’s all-Origen team manages to get a win this week. So, last week I had another commanding victory and I think the adjustments I made to the team for this week will give me another. Here’s the results for week 6:

It seems that my fixation with changing my team around each week has paid positive dividends, despite the fact that I may have held on to some of my players for too long (which inadvertently cost me those two games I lost). Team Liquid and Team Impulse both had monster games that ended up giving me the edge I needed to come out on top. Despite being a mid-ranked team, Impulse has done really well for me and my thought that having the “best” players from the region was going to be the best bet for winning fantasy games tends to be a little off base. You just need the individual performances to be average to good, and a couple of stellar point totals and you’ll pull out the victory. I still question the wisdom of Nertle sticking with a whole team, as he has less games to determine his point totals. Granted, Origen has been performing well in the EULCS, but that doesn’t show as well when looking at their point totals.

I did some more tweaking to the roster for this weekend for a few reasons. Lustboy has been giving me solid point contributions, but Gravity as a whole have been crushing the NALCS and as such I decided to put Bunnyfufuu back on the roster. I also swapped Hauntzer and the team into the lineup because they have more favorable matchups this week than Team Liquid does. The same goes for Team Impulse, who have more favorable matchups so I’m finally utilizing Xiaoweixiao who’s been on my bench or a free agent for the whole season. Otherwise my standbys of Rush, Rekkles and Apollo are still firmly planted on the roster. The upcoming matchup against Judentus looks favorable when it comes to the point projections:

It’s not a huge point discrepancy, but I think CLG are on their typical downward slide for the season, and that’s where many of his points would be coming from. Plus, the favorable matchups my teams have for the weekend should make all of the difference when it comes to point totals. Here’s the other matchups for week 7:

They look fairly even as well, but I’m hoping that Nertle can pull out the W so that I can take over first place and hopefully hold it for the rest of the split. Another bit of information that’s on the Fantasy website that I haven’t touched on before are the top performer lists, which you can take a look at now:

  week6topspots summertopspots

As you can see last week, I had one player on the list, Fenix, who did wonders for my point totals. I didn’t get a shot of it the week prior, but four members of Team Impulse (all but the support) were on the list, all scoring around 60 point. I happened to have Rush and Apollo starting for me that week, but also have owned Impact and Xiaoweixiao at points during the split, and thought they deserved the recognition. On the right, you’ll see the top players of the whole split, and though the top two spots aren’t surprising, it was nice to see that Rekkles has been a solid contributor all summer long.

So we’ll see how it all works out in a couple of days. I think I’ll be shooting to the top very soon.

Fantasy Thursdays Week 5

I was beginning to lose hope for my fantasy season, but I suppose that it was really too early to tell how things might turn out. Either way, I was back matched up against Teamsoapymid once again, and their team looked pretty superior to mine. However, super stand out performances by my Team Impulse players and some bad luck for their CLG picks gave me the edge. I did still feel like Powerofevil and Unicorns of Love let me down overall, so I made some adjustments this week as well. Here’s the results for last weekend:

It’s took bad I didn’t hold onto Impact and Xiaoweixiao from Impulse, because they too also posts 60+ point games. But that’s ok, I don’t see them doing that every week, because they’re a middle of the road team right now in the NALCS. Like I said, PoE and UoL have been failing me each week outside of the first, so I dropped them like bad habits.

I picked up Fenix and Team Liquid to compensate for those drops, but despite wanting to remove PoE, there weren’t any other mids worth trading for so he ended up on my bench. I also benched Hauntzer despite his good recent performance, only because he has harder matchups this week than Liquid does. Here’s hoping they give me the big points. I also dropped BunnyFuFuu in favor of the Fnatic support, as Rekkles has given me steady points all season, and if Lustboy tapers off I’ll give Yellowstar a whirl. I’ve been happy with the play of Rush and Apollo all season, so they aren’t going anywhere either. As of now, my projected points totals are better than my opponent (I’m facing Nertle again, who is still rocking the entire Origen squad), so I’m hopeful to be 3-2 after this weekend. Here’s the matchup:

Nertle has come up with one win, and he’s had this same team for all weeks except the first where I demolished him. I think the “all eggs in one basket” strategy is a poor one, but he seems to have lost interest in tampering, unlike the rest of us in the league. Here’s the other matchups going into week 6:

They look pretty even as well, but that really will depend on the performace of TSM and CLG, where a lot of their power is coming from. We’ll see ya next week to see what happens!
