RE2: Claire Campaign Complete

I’ve finally completed Claire’s Campaign in the Resident Evil 2 Remake. It took me just over a month to complete both campaigns, and there is still plenty to do in the game, but for now I’m calling it done. I could start up the 2nd Run Campaigns, or run the other smaller scenarios that were part of a free DLC. However, I’ve had my fill of this game for now, but I know I’ll come back around to it eventually. In total, it took me about 12 hours to finish of these campaigns, with Claire’s feeling a touch easier to complete.

The Police Station and other areas of the game remained the same, though there were different paths used and some areas that were inaccessible completely to the individual characters. One major difference was that there wasn’t the Tyrant following you around all game, but it felt like you ran into “G” (pictured above) more often.

Another big difference between the two campaigns, is that instead of interacting with Ada, this time you run into Sherry after a fight with G. Turns out that she came here looking for mommy, who is another character you should remember from Leon’s campaign, though you do talk to her more as Claire. Also, this means that instead of being able to play as Ada for a short time, instead you’ll play as Sherry, who is taken by the Police Chief to an abandoned orphanage. Later, Sherry will become infected and it’s up to you to save her, though her mother dies in the process. Good times.

I found the third fight with G to be the most difficult. It stumped me on two different (short) play sessions, but I eventually bested the Dragon and moved on with the story. Instead of fighting the Tyrant when trying to escape the self-destructing facility, we instead end up fighting G for a fourth time. It was laughably easy though, as you’re given a mini gun just before the fight and his attacks were dodged without much effort.

Overall I got a better record. I saved about three less times, but finished the run in under five hours. There are trophies and bragging rights for people who can run through some of the harder modes in an even shorter amount of time. I don’t think it’s something I would try for, but the achievements are there for those that want them. I loved the game. This is how a remake needs to be done, and I can only hope that more classics get the updated treatment.

Sales should be coming for this title soon enough (probably by the Summer) so if you can get even a small discount I’d jump on it.

RE2: Leon Campaign Complete

The last time I spoke about this year’s Resident Evil 2 Remake, I had just started the game and was gushing about it’s “new nostalgia” factor. Since then, I have wrapped up Leon’s campaign and started on Claire’s, already nearing the underground passage portion of the game. After clearing the first “chapter” so to speak, I came to find out that they really packed in a bunch of new game plus stuff into this remake. Originally thinking about only Leon and Claire’s campaign, I figured this was a maybe twenty hour game at best.

It turns out that my first run at RE2 took just under nine hours. I’ve probably played Claire for about two, so I should be clearing it in about six more. That’s near that original twenty hour mark I mentioned, and as it turns out there are “2nd Run” campaigns for both characters, along with a “Hardcore” mode that doesn’t autosave and has stronger enemies/less supply drops. I hear there are alternate “real endings” after the 2nd Runs, and apparently you’ll have to do all this stuff if you’re achievement hunting.

I’m not sure what will happen. I’m really enjoying the game thus far, but I’m likely to move onto something else after I finish Claire’s campaign. However, that does leave something to come back to, since those runs are supposed to play out a bit differently and show you the true ending so I think I’ll have to come back to it. I know with Resident Evil 5 & 6, I played through them time and again, partially to earn trophies but also because my best friend and I could co-op through them. When it came to Resident Evil 7, I played alone and I only played through once. I don’t see myself wanting to binge through the game another two times so immediately, but I do see myself checking them out further down the line. I do own the game, after all.

Part of the reason I’m hesitant to commit to extra runs is because I have other games I’m looking at wanting to play. In most of my downtime I’ve been playing Apex Legends, and poke around in other games here and there, but I like to try and keep at least one game in the rotation that I can complete, Resident Evil 2 being that game for the moment. Next I’m looking at buying either Anthem or Devil May Cry 5, the latter of which is getting better reviews at the moment, but both carry a $60 price tag. I’d think completing DMC5 would be faster and it’s something I’d likely move on from after a single playthrough, and Anthem isn’t really a game you complete if it ends up even remotely like Destiny. Whatever the case I’m going to finish Resident Evil 2 before I buy another game. But that should be soon, and I should have something new to gush about shortly thereafter.

Whatever the case, the Resident Evil 2 Remake is fantastic, and you really should pick it up if you’re a fan of the series. The new additions make it feel like a modern game, but it still holds true to its classic roots, and I love that. Highly recommended!

Sailing to Far Harbor

Having finished off my trek through the Wolfenstein games, I decided to get back to my playthrough of the Fallout 4 DLC. I finished off Automatron last month, and was now ready to head off into the Far Harbor DLC, which is one of the larger scale content pieces added to the game. The quest to get started begins by heading to Stadium City and picking up an assignment from Valentine’s Detective Agency, where you are to meet a family who’s daughter has gone missing. Heading to their house on the edge of the map took some time, but once there the family is straight to business. He thinks someone has kidnapped his daughter, while the mother thinks that she has left. Her grandfather died and had been her closest friend, spending time with her tinkering on various projects. Listening to some of her holotapes, it seems that she has made contact with some Synths on a far off island, and it seems that she is confused about her heritage. Either way, Mr. Nakano lends us his boat so we can head to Far Harbor.

Once there, we are greeted by one of the leaders of Far Harbor along with some of the locals. Immediately there are some big monsters that are laying siege to the town, so you jump in to help eliminate them. Afterwards, you let the people know why you are there, and you’re sent to the tavern to recruit “Longfellow” who will take you to Acadia, where Kasumi was said to have gone. Longfellow makes you buy him some whiskey before heading out, but leads you through the fog to get where you are going. It turns out this fog is radioactive and there are a couple of other factions on the island outside of the Far Harbor folk. The Children of the Atom (a name we’ve heard before) have a headquarters here, and are said to worship Atom, and this is said to be “his land,” probably due to all the radiation. Anyway, they seem a little crazy, but we only had a short interaction with one of their members. The other faction are these synths in Acadia who have fled the mainland and created a stronghold so that they can live freely. Longfellow gets you to Acadia and then takes off, and inside you find DiMA, who is the synth’s leader. He talks in riddles to a degree, and tries convincing you that Kasumi is a synth and that’s why she belongs in Acadia, while also trying to confuse you on the subject of whether or not you are a human. In the end we find Kasumi and she’s not going anywhere, but it’s hard to tell if she’s a synth or not, as most of these synths look like humans. The leadership of Far Harbor and Acadia have given me a multitude of tasks to complete, and that’s where I left off after this first session. I have a feeling it’s going to take me a while to clear Far Harbor, but I’m looking forward to the adventure!

Wolf 2 Complete

Wow, that was a quick turnaround! I managed to play Wolfenstein II for a couple hours here and there throughout the week and made a final push over the weekend, finally completing the game last night. It turns out I was at the very end of the game on Sunday but had stopped to go play some MTG with my roommate, so within 30 minutes last night it was over. There are DLCs and things but I’m going to pass on those, as my girlfriend bought me a copy of The Old Blood, which is the prequel to the original game and should hopefully fill in some story gaps. I should be able to complete that one long before Youngblood comes out, but at least I’ll be able to say that I played all of Machine Games’ Wolfenstein titles on offer.

What a crazy adventure this game was. There are some spoilery screenshots ahead, so if you haven’t played this year old game, you might want to skip this post.

From getting beheaded on national television to having your severed head put in a jar and then attached to a cybernetic body, this was surely a crazy experience. Seeing an aging hitler, and finally getting your revenge on the Frau was an amazingly fun time. I was hooked from start to finish, and though there wasn’t anything too challenging to complete, it was still not the easiest shooter I’ve played through. There are varying difficulty levels, so most players should be able to find their sweet spot. Graphically the game was amazing, if not a little gory. As a matter of fact there is a bunch of adult oriented content in this title, from sex scenes, to the aforementioned gore, to various vulgarities and slurs. But if you aren’t a snowflake, you’ll probably be able to take it for what it is. I’m not sure why this game got some negative reviews, as there wasn’t anything I took issue with, but perhaps I’m part of the crowd the game was designed for. I look forward to the next iteration that’s for sure!

Batman: The Enemy Within

Despite not really caring about Telltale’s Batman series, I gave it a whirl because it was free on Playstation Plus. After playing through the first season though, it got its hooks into me. After completing the title I mentioned that I was thinking about picking up the second season, and I ended up doing just that. I wanted to know what was going to happen next, and knowing that Telltale tends to continue on storylines using your choices I wanted to see how my version of Gotham was faring. I’m glad that I decided to get this game, because the story took no time at all getting going (despite the first season’s first episode being pretty boring) and the action was even tighter than the first go around.

For the most part, the game is a direct continuation and the mechanics are pretty much the same. You’ll still chat and fight as both Batman and Bruce Wayne, and you’ll have to be the great detective that you are during certain points in the game, having to link clues together to decipher crime scenes. What’s different is that this time around the game tracks your relationships with main characters, and then let’s you know how they feel about you at the end:

There are the usual major/difficult choices to make, but it seems even minor things can affect your relationships with these characters. As you can see, the range of emotions is varied – Alfred is vengeful and the Joker is ecstatic! Each of the pictures above will show the various choices I had made that left each character feeling a particular way. Spoiler alert, these feelings will change as the game goes on, so it’s good to know if you make someone angry you can still redeem yourself later!

The summary at the end of each episode shows four of the major choices, along with the feelings of each character towards you. For the most part it seems that I went with the majority of players, and it was interesting to see how the story continued on and my choices from the last season ended up affecting this one. I don’t want to get too spoilery so I’ll leave you with that.

As usual I have write-ups planned for each episode. At this point I’m need to finish up the fourth episode and then wait for the 5th to be released. This season started last August so I was able to binge through most of it, but have to wait for the last one which should be out within a month or so. I look forward to seeing another game to its conclusion this year!
